There have been several books that I have read that I feel have changed me as a person. For starters, the Harry Potter series was hugely inspirational and transformative for me as a young person growing up. More recently, This Changes Everything by Naomi Klein was true to its title. The work radically altered the way I think and feel about climate change, capitalism and my future. And a third book I’ll mention (I could go on and on) is Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz, which catalogues the journey of two young Latino boys and their love. Saenz’s novel is beautifully crafted and deeply resonant and has at times made me have to put the book down and walk away.

All of these books are simply why I have always loved books more than movies. Books for me, get to the heart and soul of the reader and evoke emotions that each reader can find in a work in a way that movies simply can’t. It is easier to find a book that can resonate with you on a deeply personal level than a movie because movies are so frequently made to target a larger audience.

While I plan to devote more time to these books individually, I find it helpful to begin here, stating the great and intense need to continue to read. Books are transformative and imaginative and cathartic. They are everything we love, everything we fear, and hold the information we aspire to acquire. Keep reading and please share the love of books with those in your life.
